Golden Geometry

Golden Geometry

In the world of design, there exists a timeless principle that has captivated the minds of engineers, architects, and artists alike for centuries: the Golden Ratio. As an experienced designer across packaging and products spanning renowned brands like Chobani and Michelin, I have witnessed firsthand the transformative power of designing with the Golden Ratio in mind.

At its core, the Golden Ratio is a mathematical ratio of approximately 1.618, often denoted by the Greek letter phi (φ). This ratio is believed to possess aesthetic properties that result in visually pleasing compositions, layouts, and objects. From the Parthenon in Athens to the iconic Apple logo, examples of the Golden Ratio's influence can be found in some of history's most celebrated designs— including Chobani's iconic cup, Michelin's sidewall, and every logo I've ever touched. :)

At Chobani, I obsessed over meticulously aligning proportions and radii in accordance with the Golden Ratio, we achieved a harmonious balance that not only enhanced the visual appeal of the packaging but also elevated the overall brand experience for consumers.

Similarly, at Michelin, I utilized Golden Geometry to design tire sidewalls that not only performed optimally but also exuded elegance and sophistication. By incorporating repeating angles and radii based on the Golden Ratio, we were able to create graphics and tread designs that not only provided solutions for noise, traction, and durability but also garnered an admiration for their aesthetic appeal.

But my fascination with the Golden Ratio extends beyond physical objects; it permeates every aspect of my design process, from logos to layouts. Whether crafting a logo for startups like Car Gurus, Shelter ,or Medly or orchestrating the layout of a packaging design, I obsess over proportions, ratios, alignment, and repeating angularity, seeking to harness the inherent beauty of the Golden Ratio in every project.

In essence, designing with the Golden Ratio is more than just a technical exercise; it's an art form that transcends disciplines and resonates with an innate sense of harmony. As designers, we have the privilege and responsibility to channel this timeless principle into creations that inspire, captivate, and endure for generations to come. Nerd rant over :)
